What To Do With Unwanted Firearms

Guidance and resources are available to help individuals safely and responsibly dispose of unwanted firearms. Whether it’s from an estate or you have let your PAL expire, you have options.

What are my options?

There are many options in Alberta to handle unwanted firearms responsibly and safely. Improper disposal can lead to dangerous situations and potential legal issues.

Option 1: Contact local law enforcement

Do not take your firearms into your local police detachment for disposal. You must contact your local detachment to arrange for pickup or delivery.

Option 2: Sell or trade to a licensed firearms dealer

In Canada, a firearm can be transferred to a business, museum or other organization with a firearms business license. For more information on transferring non-restricted, restricted and prohibited firearms, the CFP (Canadian Firearms Program) has detailed advice here.

Option 3: Transfer to a licensed individual

In Canada, a firearm can only be transferred to adults (18 or older) with a valid PAL that is for that class of firearm designated on their PAL. For more information on transferring non-restricted, restricted and prohibited firearms, the CFP (Canadian Firearms Program) has detailed advice here.
